vini-albana

The spirit of Romagna is well expressed in this enveloping wine grown in the provinces of Bologna, Ravenna and Forlì-Cesena. Albana, best known for the ‘dolce’ and ‘passito’ versions, can also be enjoyed dry and may express scents ranging from floral to fruity depending on the production zone.
A wine that embraces metamorphosis, that can be sweet yet intense, but also strong and full-bodied. It has a strong personality that reflects a rural tradition and a distinctive character recognized in 1987, when Albana was the first of the area’s white wines to receive its DOCG classification.

A drop of history
Legend has it that around 400 AD, Galla Placidia, daughter of the Eastern Roman Emperor Theodosius the Great, stopped briefly with her retinue on the hill of Bertinoro in Romagna. Here, they offered her some of the area’s light yellow wine, Albana, from a simple terracotta bowl. Delighted by the wine, Galla Placidia raised the bowl and exclaimed, “You should not be drunk so humbly, but drunk in gold” – “berti in oro” – thus engendering the name of the town.
