It is said, that around 400 AD Galla Placidia, daughter of the Roman emperor Theodosius the Great, stopped in Romagna with her retinue. Here, the blonde local wine, Albana, was offered to her in a terracotta bowl. Galla Placidia was so delighted by the wine that she raised the bowl and exclaimed “Not so humbly should you be drunk, instead you should be drunk in gold”, thus giving the town the name of Bertinoro (meaning drunk-in-gold). To this day, Bertinoro is considered the cradle of Albana wines.
